Witness the United Airlines Boeing 777 Lose a Tire Immediately Following Takeoff

A United Airlines Boeing 777 departing from San Francisco International Airport lost a tire during takeoff and the falling debris crushed a car in an airport parking lot. The incident was captured on video by a planespotter who witnessed the tire coming off as the jet was on its way to Osaka, Japan. The tire landed in an airport staff parking lot, narrowly missing one worker who was just two cars away from the impact.

The tire then went through a fence and into a Hertz parking lot, fortunately without causing any injuries. A passenger on the flight reported hearing an announcement that an object was interfering with the plane, and later learned that it was actually a wheel that fell off during takeoff. The 777-200 is designed to land safely even with missing or damaged tires, according to a United Airlines representative.

After two hours in the air, the plane safely landed at Los Angeles International Airport. Flight data revealed that the jet dumped fuel as a precaution before making an emergency landing. Despite the scare, all passengers and crew members arrived safely at their destination.
