White House confirms Hamas official Marwan Issa killed in Israeli operation in Gaza

Marwan Issa, the number two in the al-Qassam brigades, the armed wing of Hamas, was killed by an Israeli strike in the Gaza Strip. This loss is seen as symbolic for Hamas, as Issa was a key deputy of Mohammed Deif, the head of the brigades. Both men were included in the European Union’s blacklist for involvement in terrorist acts. Issa’s son had also reportedly been killed in an earlier Israeli strike.

The White House confirmed Issa’s death, stating that he was killed during an Israeli operation. The Israeli army stated that there were no hostages in the strike zone, according to their intelligence services. The leader of Hamas in Gaza, Yahya Sinouar, was also added to the EU’s blacklist in January for his involvement in an attack on Israel.

This loss is significant for Hamas and the al-Qassam brigades, as Issa was a high-ranking member of their leadership. His death in an Israeli strike is expected to have repercussions within the organization. The European Union’s sanctions on Hamas leaders further isolate the group internationally. Hamas will need to navigate these challenges as they continue their struggle against Israel.
