UNRWA Funding from the US on Hold until March 2025: Reuters

US congressional leaders and the presidential administration have reached an agreement to extend the freeze on funding for the UN Relief Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) for at least one year. This decision was made as part of a larger deal to advance a military aid package for Israel, Ukraine, and Taiwan, which had been approved by the Senate but blocked by the House of Representatives.

Instead of providing funding to UNRWA, the United States will allocate resources to other humanitarian aid projects in the Gaza Strip. It is important to note that the US is the largest donor to UNRWA, typically providing the agency with 300-400 million dollars annually. Funding for UNRWA was initially suspended in early 2024 after Israel released information implicating agency employees in the October 7 Hamas massacre in southern Israel, as well as revealing the membership of a considerable number of employees in Hamas and Islamic Jihad.
