Townhomes may be developed at Economy Inn site near Sugar Creek | WFAE 90.7

The Economy Inn was located near the Interstate 85 exit at West Sugar Creek Road, along with a cluster of other hotels. It was commonly known as a last resort for individuals before becoming homeless, and was a hotspot for crime in an area where the violent crime rate was significantly higher than the rest of Mecklenburg County. The Charlotte City Council is set to vote on Monday regarding the transfer of the property to developers who intend to build townhomes on the land where the run-down motel once stood.

In an effort to combat crime and increase affordable housing options, city officials purchased the four-acre property for $4.2 million last year. Following the purchase, the city worked to demolish the motel and relocate approximately twelve residents with the assistance of $1 million from the Mayor’s Racial Equity Initiative. The proposed plan involves selling the property to two affordable housing developers, True Homes and Prosperity Alliance, at a cost of $1.

The developers have expressed their intentions to construct a minimum of 39 townhomes on the property. These townhomes would be made available for purchase to individuals with an income equal to or less than 80% of the area median income, which equates to about $80,000 for a family of four. The goal of this initiative is to both provide more affordable housing options and revitalize the area that was once overrun by crime.
