The Purpose of Tooth Pain in Science and Medicine

Anibal Diogenes, D.D.S., Ph.D., is an endodontist specializing in the innermost part of the tooth known as pulp. The pulp is a connective tissue inside the tooth responsible for immunological and reparative functions. Teeth are more complex than many people realize, with a high density of nerves that play essential roles in the health and repair of the tooth. These nerves not only transmit pain signals but also communicate with other cells to promote tissue repair.

At The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, Anibal Diogenes serves as a professor and vice-chair of the Department of Endodontics. He is also the director of the American Board of Endodontics. Diogenes is currently researching how nerves communicate in a condition called apical periodontitis to understand how they can signal for repair without causing pain. This research has implications for overall health, including responses to conditions like osteoporosis, bone fractures, and myelitis.

Understanding the nerve communication process could lead to improved treatments for apical periodontitis, a common condition affecting half of the world’s adults. By unraveling the mechanisms of communication between nerves and tissue repair, Diogenes hopes to provide relief for patients experiencing this painful condition. Through the collaboration between The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and Science & Medicine, advancements in scientific discovery are being shared to enhance medical practices worldwide.
