Sports Business Journal names NHL’s Lehanski as Technology Executive of the Year

The National Hockey League (NHL) has been recognized for its innovative use of technology in the fan experience department with two nominations. The first nomination was for Best in Fan Experience Technology for the NHL Blast on Roblox. This groundbreaking Roblox experience featured advanced tech integrations, such as 3D recreations of highlights from the 2023 Stanley Cup Final and live game scores displayed on a digital jumbotron, providing users with an immersive and personalized experience.

The League’s second nomination was for Technology Collaboration of the Year, for its collaboration with ESPN and Beyond Sports on the “NHL Big City Greens Classic.” This broadcast showcased NHL EDGE Puck and Player tracking data in the animated environment of the Disney show. The broadcast also attracted a younger and more female viewing audience, setting a record for an alternative ESPN broadcast.

The NHL will continue its innovative broadcasts with the second installment of the “NHL Big City Greens Classic” this Saturday. The game between the Boston Bruins and Pittsburgh Penguins will air at 3 p.m. ET on ABC, ESPN+, TVAS, DISNEY, DISNEY+, DISNEY XD. This broadcast promises to be another exciting showcase of technology and collaboration in the world of sports entertainment.
