Tampa Bay Buccaneers Franchise Tag Antoine Winfield Jr. and Negotiate Multi-Year Deal with Baker Mayfield

All-Pro safety Antoine Winfield Jr. receives franchise tag from Buccaneers

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have placed the franchise tag on All-Pro safety Antoine Winfield Jr., while continuing to work on a long-term contract with him. If a new deal isn’t reached, Winfield would be due $17.123 million next season under the franchise tag. In 2023, Winfield had an impressive season, showcasing his skills as one of the league’s best defensive playmakers with three interceptions, 12 passes defended, and other impressive stats.

Drafted in the second round of the 2020 Draft, Winfield has been a key player for the Buccaneers. The team tied for second in the league with 13 takeaways on fumbles with Winfield leading the way. As they aim to build on their recent success and make the playoffs for the fourth straight season and win the NFC South championship, the Buccaneers are focused on retaining Winfield.

In addition to negotiating with Winfield, the Buccaneers also have decisions to make with quarterback Baker Mayfield. Mayfield outperformed his one-year prove-it contract last season, throwing 28 touchdowns and 10 interceptions to lead the team to the playoffs and earn a Pro Bowl berth. A multi-year deal for Mayfield is expected to command a considerably higher salary than his previous $4 million annual salary.
