Bowling Green, Kentucky, has recently welcomed a new small business – Sweaty Glass, which is the second of its kind in the state. This unique establishment is owned by Shane Spickard, who discovered his passion for glass blowing while attending the Appalachian Center for Craft in Smithville, Tennessee.
Spickard’s love for this art form has driven him to perfect his craft since 2019 and turn his garage into a personal glass-making factory. At Sweaty Glass, he creates beautiful glass cups, vases and other decorations using melted glass. He also offers classes to those interested in learning the art of glass blowing.
The process of creating these stunning glass pieces is both intricate and mesmerizing. Spickard begins by heating the glass and adding frit to create designs before sculpting the shape with various tools. He even uses wet newspaper to shape the glass and blows air through a blowpipe to help inflate and shape the vase. After smoothing out the piece with a torch, it’s placed in a stove for 12 hours before being ready for use or sale.
Sweaty Glass can be found at 144 W 10th Avenue in Bowling Green and anyone interested in learning the art of glass blowing can sign up for one of its classes.
