New World Record Set for Giant Blueberry the Size of a Ping Pong Ball

Recently, a massive blueberry weighing 20.40 grams and measuring over 1.5 inches in diameter has been declared the world’s heaviest blueberry. This gigantic berry was discovered at a farm in Corindi, New South Wales, Australia, operated by Costa Group in November of 2023. The berry belongs to the Eterna variety of blueberries, known for their large size and long shelf life. Although Eterna blueberries are typically large, this particular berry stood out for its exceptional size.

In a statement, Brad Hocking, a Senior Horticulturalist at Costa Group, praised the Eterna variety for its excellent flavor and consistently large fruit size. Despite its enormous size, the quality and flavor of the berry were not compromised, highlighting the premium quality of the variety.

While many people may consider berries to be small fruits, in botany, a berry is defined as a fleshy fruit with many seeds. Surprisingly, fruits like avocados, tomatoes, bananas, and oranges fall under the botanical definition of berries, while strawberries, despite their large size, are classified as “false fruits” due to their structure. On the other hand, the world’s heaviest fruit is a pumpkin that weighed a staggering 1,226 kilograms, surpassing the weight of a small car, highlighting the diverse range of fruits in terms of size and classification.
