Metso Supplies Innovative Technology for Copper Electrorefinery in the United States

On Monday, November 20th, Jane Bentham of the Global Mining Review published an article about a recent development in the US mining industry. Freeport-McMoRan has awarded Metso an order for a tankhouse material handling solution to their El Paso electrorefinery in Texas. The order, worth over €10 million, is booked under the Minerals segment’s 4Q23 orders received.

Metso’s scope of delivery includes Outotec Anode Preparation and Cathode Stripping Machines, both based on proven designs that ensure high safety and long-term reliability. These machines utilize modern robotic electrode handling to optimize layout and material handling efficiency in the existing refinery.

Mikko Rantaharju, Vice President of Hydrometallurgy business line at Metso, expressed his pleasure at continuing their collaboration with Freeport-McMoRan on this important project. He stated that they are confident that their technology will ensure high efficiency and quality of copper production in the El Paso copper electrorefinery after modernization. The solution combines Metso’s long-term experience with similar equipment with modern robot technology to meet the material handling requirements of the existing tankhouse.
