Koppert has won first place in the international Fruit Logistica Innovation Award Technology for its biological solution, Mirical. The award was presented in Berlin on February 9th. The award focuses on innovations in the entire fruit and vegetable supply chain. According to Tim Bossinga, product manager at Koppert, innovation is at the heart of their DNA and is a result of their continuous product development.
Koppert is replacing plastic product packaging with corrugated cardboard as part of their innovation. The cardboard strips create a “natural habitat” for the Mirical beneficial bugs by allowing them to hide and distribute themselves during transportation. This protects the predatory bugs and ensures they arrive at their destination in optimal condition. Additionally, the packaging reduces clumping while improving bug distribution in the crop, which benefits performance and whitefly control. The corrugated strips are also fully compostable, labor-saving, easy to locate, and more accurately dosed.
Mirical is a generalist pest predator that feeds on greenhouse whiteflies, tobacco whiteflies, eggs, caterpillars of the tomato leaf miner moth, and other moths. They also feed on two-spotted spider mites, aphids , and leaf miner larvae. Last year, it was launched in France.
