Kelati and Shea to lead US team at World Cross Country Championships in Belgrade

USA’s 28-strong team for the World Athletics Cross Country Championships in Belgrade on March 30 is headlined by national cross-country champion Weini Kelati and Pan-American U20 champion Ellie Shea.
Kelati secured her spot on the team by winning the senior women’s race at the US Cross Country Championships earlier this year with an impressive 37-second lead. With experience from last year’s World Cross event in Bathurst where she finished 21st, Kelati also placed seventh in the 5km race at the World Road Running Championships in Riga. Just days before her US cross-country win, Kelati set a North American half marathon record in Houston with a time of 1:06:25.

Joining Kelati on the senior women’s team is three-time NCAA steeplechase champion Allie Ostrander. Three-time NCAA steeplechase champion Anthony Rotich will lead the US senior men’s team, alongside Bathurst competitors Emmanuel Bor and Reid Buchanan.
U20 women’s team will see Ellie Shea back in action one year after her role in securing a team bronze medal. Teammates Zariel Macchia and Allie Zealand will also return from Bathurst. Kole Mathison, who contributed to the U20 men’s team bronze medal last year, is part of the squad once again for the upcoming championships. Pan-American 5000m champion Kasey Knevelbaard will lead the mixed relay team.

The complete US team for Belgrade includes Katie Camarena, Emma Grace Hurley, Weini Kelati, Cailie Logue, Abby Nichols, and Allie Ostrander for the senior women’s team. Christian Allen, Emmanuel Bor, Reid Buchanan, Anthony Camerieri, Ahmed Muhumed, and Anthony Rotich make up the senior men’s team. U20 women’s team consists of Mary Bonner Dalton, Maddie Gardiner, Zariel Macchia, Jolena Quarzo, Ellie Shea, and Allie Zealand. U20 men’s team includes Noah Breker, Birhanu Harriman, Aidan Jones, Kole Mathison, Berkley Nance, and Kevin Sanchez. The mixed relay team will have Ella Donaghu, Katie Izzo, Kasey Knevelbaard, and John Reniewicki.
