On Saturday, Israeli airstrikes targeted the Syrian city of Damascus, killing at least three people and wounding several others. This was reported by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), a non-governmental association based in London that has a network of information sources in Syria. According to SOHR, the attack occurred on the neighborhood that houses mansions of members of the army and high-ranking officials.
The Syrian state news agency, Sana, cited a military source who stated that the Israeli enemy carried out an air aggression targeting several targets in the vicinity of Damascus after midnight. The air defense systems intercepted some rockets, while others caused material damage. Sana also reported that on Friday, the Mazza military airport, west of Damascus, was targeted by an attack without specifying who was behind it. Militant groups such as Hezbollah and other pro-Iranian armed groups are present in the area.
The Israeli military has carried out hundreds of attacks against these groups since the start of the Syrian civil war in 2011. The Israeli military has stepped up its attacks on armed groups backed by Iran since Israel’s conflict with Hamas began last October. Iran is an ally of the Syrian President’s government and a key sponsor of Lebanon’s Hezbollah. Israel claims that it will not allow Iran to strengthen its presence in Syria.
