From Engineer to Billionaire: Bernard Arnault’s Luxury Empire and Family Dynasty

Bernard Arnault of LVMH Overtakes Jeff Bezos as World’s Richest Person

Bernard Arnault is the chairman and CEO of LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton, a luxury goods company that sells products such as leather goods, watches, and champagne.

Arnault was born in Roubaix, France on March 5, 1949. He attended the Roubaix lycée and the Faidherbe lycée in Lille during his early education before studying at the Ecole Polytechnique, a prestigious university in France that specializes in science and engineering. He began his professional career as an engineer with the Ferret-Savinel construction company and eventually rose to become chairman. In 1989, he became the majority shareholder of LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton and has held various roles in the company since then.

Arnault has five children from two marriages: Delphine, Antoine, Alexandre, Frédéric, and Jean. His daughter Delphine is CEO of Dior while Alexandre is EVP of Tiffany & Co., Frédéric is CEO of TAG Heuer and Jean is director of watchmaking marketing and development at Louis Vuitton. All five children hold official roles in brands controlled by his empire. Additionally, his niece Stephanie Watine Arnault also holds an official role in one of his brands.

Outside of work, Arnault’s personal life includes a relationship between his daughter Delphine and Xavier Niel, a French billionaire businessman.
