Empowering Workers: Northern Illinois University’s $158,531 Grant Enhances Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Training in Construction and General Industry

NIU awarded grant for training in workplace safety and health – Shaw Local

Northern Illinois University (NIU) has received a $158,531 Susan Harwood Federal Safety Health Training Grant to enhance workplace safety and health training. This grant aims to provide mental health and suicide prevention training to employers and employees, particularly small businesses and at-risk construction and general industry workers.

The training sessions will cover topics such as recognition, avoidance, and mental health stressor prevention. The training courses will be led by John Newquist, an OSHA-authorized outreach trainer and will range from two to four hours in length. These sessions will be available through face-to-face, virtual, and on-site delivery formats.

NIU’s Continuing and Professional Education unit and the National Safety Education Center will provide all of these courses and training opportunities. NIU’s Continuing and Professional Education offers non-credit, professional development, and certification prep courses, partnering with OSHA to provide training courses.

The National Safety Education Center at Northern Illinois University is an OSHA training institute education center that provides occupational safety and health training to workers, supervisors, and employers in both the public and private sectors.
