Colts Secure Michael Pittman Jr.’s Future with Franchise Tag: What it Means for the Team and the Wide Receiver.

Michael Pittman Jr. receives franchise tag from Colts

Reports from multiple sources confirmed the Colts’ decision to use the franchise tag on Pittman Jr. This move gives the team the opportunity to continue negotiations for a long-term contract with Pittman Jr. while preventing him from becoming a free agent next week. Although Pittman Jr. can still engage in talks with other teams, the Colts have the right to match any offers and would receive two first-round picks if he decided to leave.

During a press conference last week, Colts General Manager Chris Ballard made it clear that wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. would be a part of the team’s roster in 2024, one way or another. This statement was followed by actions, as on Tuesday, the Colts decided to use their franchise tag on Pittman Jr. to secure his position on the team.

With the franchise tag in place, the Colts will need to account for Pittman Jr.’s cap number of $21.816 million for the upcoming season. However, Pittman Jr. is not obligated to sign the tag, and if he does, his salary for the 2024 season would be guaranteed. In an update later in the day, the Colts officially confirmed their decision to use the franchise tag on Michael Pittman Jr., solidifying their commitment to keeping the talented wide receiver on the team for the foreseeable future.
