Chase Lucas signs with the 49ers as a special teams player

The San Francisco 49ers have made a new signing to strengthen their special teams unit. Cornerback Chase Lucas has agreed to a one-year contract with the team, as reported by Mike Garafolo of NFL Network. Despite being listed as a cornerback, Lucas did not see any playing time on defense last season. Instead, he contributed on special teams, participating in 230 plays and excelling as the Lions’ punt gunner.

After making Jalen Reeves-Maybin the highest-paid core special teams player in the NFL, the Lions decided to let Lucas go in free agency. It appears that Detroit believed they had already invested enough in their special teams players. Now, the 49ers are betting on Lucas to have a positive impact on their kicking game this upcoming season.
