Report: US Army Testing Generative AI Chatbots in Military Exercises for War Games

The US Army Research Laboratory is currently conducting experiments to determine whether OpenAI’s generative AI solutions can be used in battle planning scenarios, specifically within a military video game. According to a report by New Scientist, US Army researchers are utilizing OpenAI’s GPT-4 Turbo and GPT-4 Vision models to provide information on simulated battlefield terrain, details about friendly and enemy forces, and military tactics related to attacking and defending. In addition to these models, they are also using two other AI models based on older technology.

The integration of generative AI into battle planning is part of a broader effort by the US Army to leverage artificial intelligence in their strategic operations. The military has successfully identified rocket launchers in Yemen, surface vessels in the Red Sea, and provided target recommendations for strikes in Iraq and Syria through Project Maven, the US Department of Defense’s main AI initiative. However, the prospect of deploying AI on the battlefield raises significant ethical concerns as it involves entrusting decisions that could potentially result in casualties to machines, which brings up dystopian scenarios portrayed in movies like Terminator.

Despite these concerns, the military continues to pursue the advancement of AI capabilities to enhance operational efficiency.
