Best graduate programs in Wisconsin, ranked by U.S. News & World

The latest U.S. News & World Report rankings included the top graduate schools in Wisconsin, with more than 2,000 programs across the country evaluated. The report, published in April for the 2024-25 academic year, ranked graduate programs in fields such as business, education, law, and nursing, among others.

According to the report, the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s School of Education tied for first overall with Teacher’s College, Columbia University. This was an improvement from last year, where they were ranked third overall and second among public universities. Additionally, several of Marquette University’s graduate programs saw improvements on the list, including their master’s program in the College of Nursing which moved up from 66 to 58.

Schools were assessed based on expert opinions and statistical data measuring the quality of the faculty, research, and post-graduate outcomes. The full list of rankings can be found on the U.S. News website.

In terms of specific program rankings, the University of Wisconsin-Madison was ranked at #43 for top business graduate programs, #36 (tie) for top law graduate programs, and #1 (tie) for top education graduate programs. Marquette University was ranked at #58 (tie) for top nursing graduate programs, #68 (tie) for top law graduate programs, and #142 (tie) for top engineering graduate programs.

Other Wisconsin universities included in the rankings for various programs were the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, Alverno College, and the Milwaukee School of Engineering. With the diversity and excellence of these programs, Wisconsin universities are proving to be top choices for graduate education.
