Rock County sees increase in overdose cases, health officials say

Substance abuse is a serious issue that affects many individuals in Wisconsin. If you or someone you know is struggling with addiction, help is available through the Wisconsin Addiction Recovery Helpline, which can be reached at 211 for free, confidential, 24/7 support.

In Rock County, there has been a concerning increase in drug overdoses linked to cocaine products laced with opioids. The Rock County Public Health Department has reported at least five such overdoses from April 3 to 8, which is higher than the normal rate. This spike in overdoses may indicate the presence of very potent opioids or other drugs in the local drug supply.

To help prevent overdoses, the RCPHD encourages individuals who use drugs to follow safer use guidelines. These include not using alone, having Narcan (an opioid overdose reversal drug) nearby, and using fentanyl test strips to check for the presence of dangerous substances. These supplies are available at various locations in Rock County, including the Beloit Public Library, the Rock County Sheriff’s Office, HealthNet of Rock County Inc., and Vivent Health Wisconsin. Narcan can also be purchased at pharmacies without a prescription.

It is important to know the signs of an overdose and what to do if you suspect someone is experiencing one. By being informed and prepared, individuals can help prevent tragic outcomes associated with substance abuse. If you or someone you know is struggling with addiction, do not hesitate to seek help and support.
