Ferry sinks off the coast of Mozambique, leaving over 90 dead

More than 90 people have lost their lives on the northern coasts of Mozambique following the sinking of a fishing boat that was being used as a ferry. The boat was packed with passengers, carrying around 130 individuals, and encountered problems while trying to reach the island of Mozambique in the province of Nampula. Due to overcrowding and the unsuitability of the vessel for transporting passengers, it ultimately sank, resulting in the tragic loss of 91 lives, as reported by Jaime Neto, the secretary of State of Nampula. Among the deceased were many children.

Rescuers have managed to find five survivors so far, but the search efforts are ongoing, although they are being impeded by challenging sea conditions. Most of the passengers had been traveling to the island due to panic caused by misinformation about a cholera outbreak, which has been a significant issue in Mozambique. Nearly 15,000 cases and 32 deaths have been recorded since October, with Nampula being one of the most affected areas.

Authorities are working to determine the causes of the shipwreck, and investigations are underway. This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the dangers faced by individuals living in one of the poorest countries in the world. The risks associated with misinformation and inadequate transportation infrastructure have had devastating consequences in this case. The loss of so many lives highlights the urgent need for improved safety measures and emergency response capabilities in the region.
