Mayor designates April as John P. Wyatt, M.D., Environment and Health Awareness Month

The 2024 John P. Wyatt, M.D., Environment, and Health Symposium took place on April 4 at the University of Kentucky campus at the J. David Rosenberg College of Law Grand Courtroom. This symposium is dedicated to celebrating the legacy of Dr. John P. Wyatt and his groundbreaking environmental clinical research on air pollution and lung pathology.

Representatives from universities and agencies throughout the state came together to share research and practices concerning the environment’s impact on health in Kentucky. Lexington Mayor Linda Gorton officially declared April as John P. Wyatt, M.D., Environment, and Health Awareness Month in recognition of the event.

Mayor Gorton emphasized the significance of Lexington as a regional center for healthcare and agriculture, highlighting the invaluable contributions of leaders like Dr. John P. Wyatt. She expressed the city’s commitment to educating future leaders, raising awareness about environmental public health issues, and ensuring a healthy environment for future generations.

Organized by Erin Haynes, Dr.P.H., the Kurt W. Deuschle Professor of Preventive Medicine and Environmental Health, and director of the UK Center for the Environment, the symposium marked an important milestone with Mayor Gorton’s proclamation. This recognition underscores the continued support of the Wyatt family in advancing environmental health research and advocacy initiatives.

The annual symposium is made possible thanks to the generous contributions of the John P. Wyatt family, particularly his son, Philip Wyatt. Dr. John P. Wyatt was a trailblazer in linking air pollution to lung disease and served as the director of the UK Tobacco and Health Research Institute. Prominent speaker Arthur Frank, M.D., Ph.D., shared insights during the event, reflecting on his time teaching at the UK Department of Preventive Medicine and Environmental Health.
