Cycling crash leaves Jonas Vingegaard with broken collarbone and ribs

Two-time Tour de France winner Jonas Vingegaard suffered a broken collarbone and multiple fractured ribs during a race crash in Spain on Thursday. Vingegaard, representing Denmark, was involved in the crash during the fourth stage of the Tour of the Basque Country.

The incident occurred during the descent of the Olaeta climb, around 35 kilometers from the finish line. According to his team, Visma | Lease a Bike, several riders at the front of the peloton slid straight on at a right-hand bend, leading to the crash. Vingegaard crashed heavily and was promptly taken to a hospital for treatment.

Other notable cyclists who were involved in the crash include Tokyo Olympic time trial champion Primož Roglič from Slovenia and world road race and time trial champion Remco Evenepoel from Belgium. Both Roglič and Evenepoel decided to withdraw from the race following the incident.

While Roglič appeared to be in relatively good spirits, giving a thumbs-up to a broadcast camera as he rode away in a car, Evenepoel went to a hospital for further examinations. As of now, neither Roglič’s nor Evenepoel’s teams have released specific information regarding their injuries sustained during the crash.
