Celebrating Organ Transplant Patients: Independence Health System Supports Donation Efforts in April

Independence Health System will be honoring patients awaiting organ donations in April for Donate Life Month. Participating hospitals including Frick in Mt. Pleasant, Latrobe, and Westmoreland in Greensburg will be kicking off the month with a flag raising ceremony on Friday.

Chief Medical Officer Dr. Carol Fox stated that the health system is in a unique position to inspire the community to become organ donors. She mentioned that the more people they can inspire to donate organs, the better they can serve their mission to advocate for the well-being of the entire community.

In addition to the flag raising ceremony at the participating hospitals, the health system will also be celebrating Blue and Green Day on April 12th. This national day of recognition for organ donations involves employees wearing blue and green to work. A private flag raising event will also be held at the Butler Memorial Hospital intensive care unit.

According to the Center for Organ Recovery Education, over 100,000 people in the country are currently awaiting organ transplants, with about 7,000 of them residing in the state. This nonprofit organization is partnered with 150 hospitals and healthcare facilities.
