Abbas, Hamas and Qatar: Seeking Peaceful Solutions in Gaza

Abbas travels to Doha to negotiate a technocratic government in the PA with Hamas leaders

Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Mazen), the head of the Palestinian Authority, arrived in Doha on February 11 with the hope of meeting with members of the Hamas Politburo. The Qatari government is serving as a mediator in negotiations between Hamas and Israel, and Abbas is seeking the assistance of the Qatari government to facilitate a meeting with the leaders of Hamas political leadership. He intends to invite them to form a government of technocrats within the Palestinian Authority, which will be under international control. This body will be responsible for overseeing the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip, which has been severely damaged by years of conflict and blockade. By placing this body under international control, funds can be transferred more easily for the reconstruction efforts in Gaza.
